Recycling
The Government is encouraging us to recycle more of our household waste. At present in this
country we recycle just over a tenth of household waste compared with approximately half in Belgium
and Germany and two-thirds in Austria.
Unfortunately in recent years, Binley Woods has lost two valuable recycling facilities following
the closure of the Oakdale Rose and Garden Centre (actually in Brandon) and changes at 'The Roseycombe'. Now
the former facilities at Binley Woods County Library and Binley Woods Post Office are no longer available,
no public recycling facilities exist within the village (unless you know better!)
Some time ago, Rugby Borough Council set up a Red Box recycling service. This was severly limited in scope,
but even the extended service introduced in June 2003 is still not totally comprehensive.
The collection on alternate Fridays takes in newspapers, magazines, catalogues, white telephone directories,
junk mail, glass bottles and jars of any colour and aluminium and steel drinks and food cans. There are no
facilities for card, cardboard, envelopes, yellow pages, books, glass other than bottles and jars, plastics
and aerosol cans.
In June 2005, the Borough Council introduced a Green Waste collection scheme using green wheelie bins. This
operates on the same dates as the Red Box scheme. The Green Waste scheme is for grass cuttings, hedge prunings,
plants and flowers, twigs, small branches, leaves and weeds. Real Christmas trees can be placed in the green bin
after Christmas but all decorative material must be removed. Larger trees can be cut down to fit. The Green Waste
collection does not cover anything else and bins that contain unacceptable material will not be emptied.
Full details of the Red Box and Green Waste scheme, and replacements for damaged or lost boxes or bins, can be
obtained from Rugby Borough Council on 01788 533328. Dates of collection for the period up to the end of June 2006
have been published by Rugby Borough Council and also appear here.
Some people may find it equally convenient to use the other recycling facilities around the area as they
pass by or call to shop etc. This could easily be the case for those households with large quantities of
recyclable material, where the fortnightly collection would not have sufficient capacity. Some of the
facilities allow the recycling of items not covered by the Red Box scheme.
How Can We Recycle Other Items Then?
Within reach of mobile residents there are seven recycling centres of various sizes. There are
doubtless others so if you know of any not listed, please contact us
giving details.
