Questions and Answers
Without doubt, there will be a number of questions that arise from using Binley Woods On-line.
In this section, we have tried to cover some of the more obvious ones, and will add more as time
goes on.
I click a link, but nothing seems to happen. Why?
Links to external sites are designed to open in a fresh window in your browser. This means that the Binley
Woods On-line page where the link appears will always be there. Some older browsers might not support this
facility. Others will not open the page directly, but will appear as a new box on the status bar at the
bottom of the screen. Clicking this box will open the new page, and by clicking the boxes on the status
alternately, bar you can 'toggle' between the open windows. Each new link you click will open in the same
window. In this case, if you clicked an 'internal link', to another Binley Woods On-line page, it would open
in the window used by 'Travel and Transport' in the example below. A new external link would open in the window
used by 'Cycle Maps Directory'
In most cases, the window will open with the linked page displayed. When you have finished with the link, you
can close the page by clicking on the red 'X' at the top right of your screen. If the link does not work, then it
may no longer be available. See the next question.
Why do some links not work?
The Internet is constantly changing, with new web-sites being added daily. Sometimes, old ones
are removed, whilst other are given new web addresses. This causes the 'Page not found' message to
appear in your browser. This may be a temporary problem either whilst the site is being maintained,
or may be permanent. If you experience this problem, please try the link again once or twice later
in the day or preferably the following day. If the link still does not work, please
contact us giving full details including the page on which the link appears and
the name of the link.
Some pages seem to take an age to download. Why?
Binley Woods, along with a number of areas still does not have access to 'Broadband' internet connectivity.
BT claims to be working on this, but we may still have to wait some time. However, many commercial web-site
developers seem to think that 'Broadband' is universal and happily include 'Flash' and other bandwidth
hungry features in their web-sites. This causes long download times for people without 'Broadband'. This
is outside our control.
When I print off pages, the right-hand edge is missing.
The Binley Woods On-line web-site is optimised for monitors with a display of 800 pixels width. If your monitor
display is set to less, then this will probably occur. Try printing off in 'Landscape' format. You can normally do
this clicking 'File', 'Print' at the top of the open window, to open the printer dialogue box and then selecting
the command for your printer which allows you to set page orientation.
You promote Binley Woods On-line as 'The locally created web-site promoting the local community'. Some of
your advertising is for businesses not based in Binley Woods.
Binley Woods On-line does promote the local community. However, advertising is included from wider afield
when it does not compete with local businesses. For example, the village is home to several central heating
businesses, a glazing company and a health & fitness club. Advertising for competing businesses based outside the
village will not appear on the web-site. The same principle will apply to other business advertising.
