Other Changes

Binley Woods was historically part of Binley Parish, broader responsibility falling to the Foleshill Rural District Council. In 1932 Binley village was absorbed into the city of Coventry and Binley Woods became a parish in its own right. From then until 1974 the area came under the jurisdiction of the Rugby Rural District Council.

Binley Woods has developed almost exclusively along the side roads to the south of Rugby Road. From a population of 350 in 1951 numbering 1700 in 1991 there are well over 2000 residents of the village today.

Acknowledgements – This brief history is based on a much more detailed work by David Fry entitled “Binley Woods: a Warwickshire example of Inter-War ‘Shack and Track’ development”. This was published in The Local Historian published by the British Association for Local History in August 2000 and previously in Warwickshire History Winter 1998/9 issue. David’s research involved interviews with Binley Woods residents as well as study of documents in archives at Coventry and Warwick Record Offices. Binley Woods On-line thanks David for permission to use his work.

An extended version of David's work including coverage of two other 'track and shack' developments in Hampshire is held in the Reference section of Rugby Library. Unfortunately, this is not available for loan.

Any work such as this is as complete as the information available to the author at the time of writing. It is quite possible that further unpublished material exists and both David Fry and Binley Woods On-line would welcome any comments or advice which will extend the recorded data about Binley Woods.

What do you know about the history of Binley Woods?

Binley Woods may not be that old, but it still has history, and it's earliest days are still within living memory. It would be a great pity of they were allowed to go unrecorded.

A walk round the village shows that it has been developed over a number of years. Many earlier properties - and some more recent ones - have their own unique character. However, redevelopment is not uncommon. Some older properties have been replaced by newer, larger houses taking advantage of the large plots available.

Over the years, there must have been many special occasions, such as the 1977 Silver Jubilee. How were they celebrated? What about more local happenings such as the amalgamation of the two schools? Was anything done to mark the occasion?

Can you help?

Do you or someone you know have any memories of the early days of Binley Woods? Binley Woods On-line would like to dedicate part of the web-site to stories, reminicences and images of Binley Woods, its characters, celebrations and events, its development and buildings from the 1920's (or earlier if you know better!) right up to the recent. If you can help with any information, please contact us giving details.
